Background checks can be incredibly tricky and you should use due diligence in vetting to avoid negligent hiring practices. While there are plenty of internet services that claim to provide background checks, they are designed to upsell you on services and buy a continuing service.
Many of the databases used are owned by credit bureaus such as Transunion and the information in databases reports are in part the headers from the credit bureaus. The data is not analysed by the computer, it takes an experienced private investigator to do that. What is also problematic are the states and/or courts that do not disseminate information to the databases. Just because it doesn’t show up in a background check doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Additionally some of the information in the databases can be wrong or reflect another person and there are warnings in the database that caution should be used in accepting this information.
Some investigators will produce a report and sell that to you as a background search. We also log into courts to see if something is not showing up and even then there are times it will not be found. Having done hundreds of reports we have knowledge of some of the challenges and go much further to get to the information you need to make good choices.
Some states are very restrictive as to what information can be used to make hiring decisions and human resources should keep on top of the laws. To help provide a quality work product, we have obtained a certification, C.P.S.B.I (Certified Pre-employment Screening and Background Information Specialist). We also have a $1,000,000.00 insurance policy in the event out work product caused harm.
Do you self a favor and weigh whether you want to risk a huge lawsuit over negligent hiring or putting a home, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the hands of someone who will produce a $35.00 report that is in no way a real background check.
